Research Overview
Sharmili has a research focus on understanding the inflammatory responses of microglia, the brain's macrophages, and modulating them using mesenchymal stem cells.
With this cellular approach, the Neuroinflammation Group aims to identify the mechanisms and molecules modulated within microglial cells by mesenchymal stem cells to reveal therapeutic strategies for neuroinflammatory conditions.
Working with mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and mouse microglia, we have shown various responses of microglia including nitric oxide production and proliferation to be modulated by mesenchymal stem cells. We also reveal changes that occur within mesenchymal stem cells when in contact with microglia, revealing cell-cell interactions.
