History

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is committed to developing and maintaining high-quality programs of research. To contribute to the UPM’s strategic research missions, a group of scientists from the Medical Genetics Laboratory proposed the development of a research centre that can enhance disciplinary and interdisciplinary research collaborations, as well as to effectively manage the resources and research support for its members and to the wider university community.

This research centre of excellence (RCoE) was established in June 2012 and was originally known as the Genetic Medicine Research Centre (GMRC). The GMRC consisted of only one group, the Medical Genetics Research Group. The Regenerative Medicine Research Group later joined the research centre in early 2013 to further strengthen the organization as the premier research centre at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. The name of the research centre was changed to Genetics & Regenerative Medicine Research Centre (GRMRC) upon the participation of the Regenerative Medicine Research Group to properly reflect the scope of research activities at the centre. Syahril Abdullah is currently the head of the GRMRC.

GRMRC is constituted formally as part of the faculty’s and UPM’s organization and is subject to its direction, oversight, and strategic plans.
