Medical Genetics Laboratory

Medical Genetics Laboratory (MGL) at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) was established in 1998. MGL was first known as the Laboratory of Molecular Biology under the administrative purview of Department of Human Growth and Development located at the old Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences building within the main UPM campus. Rozita Rosli was the head of the laboratory who was also leading the Clinical Genetics Unit from 1998-2009. Under her leadership, another laboratory was established in year 2001 and was named as the Laboratory of Medical Genetics.

In year 2006, both laboratories were moved to the new faculty building next to the Hospital Serdang. Both facilities were joined into the current MGL under the purview of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Syahril Abdullah was appointed as the head of Clinical Genetics Unit since mid-2009. Abhi Veerakumarasivam was the laboratory manager from 2009 – 2011, and was integral in the effort to expand the laboratory to its current size.  Michael KH Ling was the laboratory manager in 2011, until Chau Deming took over the responsibility in 2013.

To date, MGL houses 8 principle investigators and more than 30 postgraduate students. The lab is fully equipped with facilities for tissue culture, microbiology and genomics works as well as various high-end equipments including Roche’s LightCycler and Qiagen’s Rotor-Gene. Since 1998, more than 20 MSc and 10 PhD scholars have graduated from MGL and we continue to provide quality training for postgraduate students who are pursuing their MSc and PhD candidatures in the laboratory.
